Every year, as the heavy seasonal rains give way to the brilliant golden skies of Birraa, the Oromo nation undergoes a profound spiritual and cultural awakening. The fields burst into vibrant flora (Birraa baala daraartuu), and the air is filled with a sense of renewal, gratitude, and deep reverence. At the heart of this seasonal transformation lies Irreecha—the grand thanksgiving festival of the Oromo people.

Unlike a fixed holiday, Irreecha is a living, breathing tradition that transcends any single year. It is an evergreen celebration of life, a timeless anthem of gratitude sung across generations whenever the season of harvest and light returns.

What is Irreecha in Oromo Society?

In Oromo society, Irreecha is much more than a festival; it is the cornerstone of culture, spirituality, and social cohesion. It marks the transition from the dark, rainy months of hardship (Birra/Ganna) into the luminous, life-giving season of spring (Birraa).

During Irreecha, millions of Oromo people gather in colorful attire by the riversides (malkaa) and lush green hilltops to offer their ultimate thanksgiving to Waaqa (the Creator). It is a moment where:

  • Gratitude Meets Creation: The community thanks Waaqa for preserving life, health, and livestock through the changing seasons.
  • Safuu is Realigned: Safuu—the moral, ethical, and ecological balance of the universe—is reflected upon, ensuring that humanity lives in harmony with nature and one another.
  • Oromumma Thrives: It is an expression of collective identity, unity, and shared heritage (Oromumma), bringing together elders, youth, and families in a massive choreography of peace and joy.
